Natchitoches

Here begins my informal and far from complete tour of Louisiana. (See previous post) We ventured to Natchitoches (pronounced nack-a-dish) on Memorial Day to retrieve Eric after New Student Orientation weekend at his new high school, the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts, located on the campus of Northwestern State University. Blessed by perfect weather, we aquainted ourselves with this charming town.

Natchitoches has the distinction of being the oldest town in Louisiana, established in 1714. Another claim to fame is that the movie Steel Magnolias was filmed here in 1989.

Upon Eric's recommendation, we had lunch at Mighty Max Superdogs. Great wraps, too.

Browsing the shops on Front Street.

The balconies over storefronts remind me of New Orleans.

Resting in the shade by the Visitors' Center.

Natchitoches thrives along the pristine Cane River.

A lovelyEnglish garden grows on the grounds of the Roque House, circa 1805.

The Roque House is a classic example of French Creole architecture.

Live oaks make for great tree climbing.

The great thing about Natchitoches is, we've got three years (Eric's grades 10-12) to explore this town.

Neat. I've never been to Natchitoches, but always mean to go.

I lost my first comment so here I go again:

Wait until you see the beautiful Christmas lights, Angie. Christmas in Natchitoches is wonderful.

Jan! Shame on you for never having been to Natchitoches, you Louisiana girl, you!

I agree with Jess. I was going to suggest that you see the Christmas lights in Natchitoches. The town and the town of Nachodoches(sp) are named for two Indian brothers, so I am told. Good project for Eric and Andrew to check up on my information. I hope to talk Jim into going back this year.

Jess is right. The Christmas lights are beautiful. We ran across a man painting beautiful Christmas pictures with coffee. He used different strengths of coffee and created sepia toned pictures.
Hope you go at Christmas time.

It's a very pretty town, judging from your photos. I like the ones of the guys climbing the trees the best! But I'm still trying to wrap my head around the pronunciation. French + Indian influences, I'm guessing?

CHM, I think mostly Indian.

I'm thrilled for Eric to have this opportunity. Natchitoches is a great place. At Christmas it has the most amazing lights. Eric will do well. Tell him I'm proud of him and tell Andrew the same.

Thanks, Nona. I will.
